RURAL COMMUNITIES IN LINCOLNSHIRE
North & South Somercotes
On June 22nd 1964, 112 pupils from the Senior Department of the Church of England All-age school in North Somercotes walked from this school to spend the rest of their school time at The John Birkbeck High School.

The Headmaster, Mr. D.M. Aegerter, along with his staff of eight, set out to teach children from surrounding villages for the next five years of their school lives.

October 20th 1964 was the official opening by the then Director of Education Mr. F.J. Birkbeck M.A. At that time there were 77 boys and 64 girls on roll.

The groundsman was Chummy Riggall whose careful attention of the grounds resulted in a first class sports field and a wonderful array of flowers at the front of the school.

The school was built by Humberstone and Pulford. The cost of the building work and layout of the sports field was £122,000. Furniture and equipment £9.300 and the canteen equipment was £1,750.

The school's log book records some interesting events.

26th January 1990 - the school suffered broken windows and structural damage due to a "great storm".
February 13th 1990 - Governors approved plans to build a primary school on The Birkbeck site.

Staff and students returned to school after Easter with the prospect of no hot water due to boiler problems. I bet all the students were disappointed at the prospect of not having showers.

April saw the fact noted that the primary school would not be built on the Birkbeck Site with the thought that "a great opportunity was missed".

This was the year that the swimming pool closed due to lack of funds.

October 21st 1991 - was an important day, (for me anyway), as Mr. A. Birch was appointed as head of science, later to take over as deputy head and more recently as headteacher.

Mr. Alger made his last entry to the log book on Sunday 30th March 1997. He left the school in "good shape". Mr. Alger commented that Birkbeck was "a great school, with lots of potential and hoped that Mr. Tristram would enjoy the job as much as he did".

So, since opening the school, Birkbeck has had 4 headteachers and an acting headteacher. Mr. Aegerter, Mr. Alger, Mr. Booth (acting), Mr. Tristram and Mr. Birch.

This year 1999 in Y7, the school is full - long may it continue. Total on roll 290.
