Charles Wilmot had talked for years to his family about a garden club for the village until one day the dream was realised.
North Somercotes Garden Club was started in October 1997 by a number of keen gardeners who had been organising the local Horticultural Show on behalf of the Playing Fields Association.
The PFA were eager to help the club form and donated £100 towards the start up costs.
Mr. Charles Wilmot chaired the first few meetings before an official AGM took place in February 1998 when he was voted in as Chairman. The other main committee members were Mrs Melanie Drewery (Treasurer), Mrs Lindsey Prince (Secretary) and Mr Murray Tute (Vice Chairman).
Starting with just 6 members plus the Wilmot family, the club has gone from strength to strength and now has 26 regular members plus guests every month.
The meetings originally took place in the pavillion but as cold nights drew in the club moved into the Church Hall where it meets monthly on the second Thursday.
There have been a lot of very interesting guest speakers including local experts Judy Harry who has been an inspiration and a great help from the very start and Alec Russell, head gardener at the Lakeside Park. Talks on Cooking with herbs from chef Richard Jeffrey who was trained by Kevin Woodford a well know top chef and organic gardening talks from John Reimer whose garden is an absolute picture. Thanks to all of them and everyone else who has had input.
Members enjoy lovely suppers in the price of their membership, which have included delights such as Pie and Pea Suppers, Home made soup and much more.
The club enjoys trips out to Garden Centres, Gardens, Nurseries and Christmas Dinner subsidised from the subs paid each month. With one fund-raising event during the year the Garden Club members grow seedlings and plants for the annual plant sale in May to raise money to pay for excellent speakers etc. Fees are currently £3 per year membership (£5 joint) and £2.50 monthly.
