In 1950 a group of men decided it was time something was done with the field, known to all as the 'Reck', left to the village by a former Vicar many years ago, for the use of young people. Permission from the Bishop of Lincoln was obtained, as it was under the trust of St. Mary's Church.
The main mover was Mr. Felix Rooney, along with Mr. Frank Worthington, Mr. Ron Capp and Mr. Sidney Waller.
The urgent need was a Tennis Court and Children's Play Area. The Court was made over two years with voluntary labour. Being not long after the War, materials were scarce, also money. Various organisations gave cash and the first swings were erected. Later the large field was purchased housing the Cricket pitch, Football pitches and Bowling Green. The Cricket Pavilion was given, bought, and erected by the late Mr. Donald Humberstone. Mr. Rooney's ideal was all sports under the same name, thus the Sports Club became the present Playing Field Association. For many years the President was Mr. R. Capp, this has now passed to Mrs. Iris Waller, the only surviving member of the original Committee.
Officers are:- Chairman - Mrs. M. Drewery, Vice Chairman - Mr. T. Stones, Secretary - Mrs. V. Stones, Mr. C. Noble, Trustees - Mr. C. Lowis, Mr. D. Hopper, Mr. R. Libell.
There are a number of improvements which the Playing Field's Committee is keen to carry out.
The existing tennis courts are in a poor state of repair, and it is proposed that a multi-purpose sports area could be built here, with basket-ball and 5-a-side pitches.
The recently formed Under 11 Football Club has applied to the Football Association for grant aid for a new building to provide shower/changing facilities.
Other plans include improved access from Keeling Street, the provision of a roller blade/skate board area, and robust wooden play equipment for the younger children. Money for these improvements, and upkeep of the Playing Fields, is raised by car boot sales, and the Village Gala, held in July each year.
Mrs. Iris Waller.
